Though most parents understand that involvement in their child’s language learning will help them academically, they feel anxious they do not know how to do this effectively. Cambridge English TV offers a range of solutions focusing on engagement and the roles within this of the teacher, young learners and their parents. The advice includes guidance on the Cambridge English Young Learners tests and supporting practical resources and ideas.
EFL expert Karen Saxby offers comment in four areas: 1. Why parents might want or not want to engage in their child’s language learning; 2. Rethinking why we learn languages; 3. How teachers can encourage parents to engage more; 4. Ways in which parents can help their children even if they have little English themselves. Karen explains that the four essentials of the teacher/parent role are: information, direction, caring and energizing, and that a parent triggers the intrinsic motivation that makes the learning experience fun and meaningful.
